The Town of Ulster and Callanan Industries in conjunction with state authorities are monitoring a rockslide that occurred on Main Street, in the hamlet of East Kingston at Callanan Industries Inc. ("Callanan" ) East Kingston Quarry property. The event occurred on July 25, 2019 with another minor slide on August 9, 2019. The rockslides appear to have been caused by the collapse of a historic cement mine opening (cave) on quarry property. These mine openings (caves) were created in the late 1800's by th e extraction of cement rock. Callanan, which operates the East Kingston Quarry, was not conducting any blasting (located on the west side of Rte. 32) at the time of the rockslides. However, Callanan has suspended all blasting, effective noon on August 12, 2019 until the stability of the slopes overlooking Main St can be determined.
Callanan has retained geotechnical consultants to study and analyze the conditions on the mountain overlooking Main Street to determine a proper course of action for future operations in the Quarry.
On Saturday, August 10, 2019 concrete barriers were placed on the west sid e of Main Street as a precautionary measure to prevent any errant rocks from entering or crossing the road should another event occur.
The Town of Ulster will issue future releases as the information becomes available.
