City-wide LED Streetlight Conversion Has Begun

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steve Noble is pleased to announce that the project to convert every streetlight in the City of Kingston to LED is now underway. Crews from D&M Electrical Contracting, Incorporated began mobilizing last week, and as of Thursday, January 16, have installed more than 400 LED streetlights across the City of Kingston. Installation started in Wards 4 and 5, with crews beginning work in Ward 3 this week. The City is upgrading over 2,400 streetlights with LED technology to significantly reduce energy consumption, utility/maintenance costs, and greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation for street lighting. Upgrading to LEDs will provide improved light quality and public safety throughout our City. Initial projections are that this improvement will reduce annual municipal energy use by 1,000,000 kWh, and save the City over $200,000 per year on utility bills and maintenance costs. “This initiative, which has been in the works for many years, will greatly benefit our community,” said Mayor Noble. “Not only will we be cutting hundreds of thousands of dollars in the city’s ongoing energy costs, it will also be making our community more sustainable for generations to come.
