Statement: Update from Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger on the Whitehouse Fire

11/10/24 (8:43 am) UPDATE from Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger on the Whitehouse Fire in the Town of Denning:

“Fire suppression efforts continued today at the Whitehouse Fire, a brush fire in the Ulster County Town of Denning. Responding agencies are establishing a control line around the fire and are continuing to work toward full containment. Based on a flyover estimate yesterday evening, the fire is approximately 422 acres. 

Some 185 firefighters from 20 agencies from Sullivan, Ulster and Delaware Counties have been involved in fire suppression efforts. The incident is being managed through the unified command system by Ulster County Department of Emergency Services, Sullivan County Division of Public Safety, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Grahamsville Fire Department. We’d like to thank all agencies and firefighters involved, as well as community partners, families, and friends who have donated food, supplies, and resources to battle this fire. 

Please avoid travel to the area of the Sundown Forest. The following roads are closed to traffic at this time: Peekamoose Rd. at the Denning Town Line through Sundown Rd.”

The Cooling Center will be open today, Thursday 8/12, and run from 5PM to 9PM. It will again open tomorrow, Friday 8/13, and run from 9AM to 9PM. The center is operated by Catholic Charities and is located at the 2nda Iglesia La Mision Church, 80 Elmendorf St, Kingston NY 12401. The center can be contacted directly at 845-481-4665 Law Enforcement agencies or any other organization that come in contact with or becomes aware of any individuals that are in need of sheltering can bring them to the cooling center. County Executive Approves Over $2 Million In Funding For Ulster County Area Transit’s Capital Program

KINGSTON, N.Y. – County Executive Pat Ryan signed a series of resolutions today that provide just over $2 million in funding to Ulster County Area Transit’s 5-Year Capital Plan. Together, these resolutions provide the ability for UCAT to maintain its bus fleet in a state of good repair and invest in electric buses and charging equipment that are part of County Executive Ryan’s Big Five priorities for a Green New Deal for Ulster County. 

“This funding will help ensure that UCAT is among the first small transit agencies to champion electric buses and that Ulster County continues to lead the way in promoting a more sustainable future through the continued investment in clean energy to power our local transportation,” County Executive Pat Ryan said. 

UCAT was awarded these funds through a combination of federal and state grants. Specifically, UCAT was the recipient of Federal Transit Administration’s Section 5311 funds for rural areas in the amount of $1,181,074, which will be used to purchase 5 buses to replace buses that have reached the end of their useful life. The New York State Department of Transportation also awarded UCAT $834,720 as part of its Accelerated Transit Capital and Modernization and Enhancement Programs. These funds will be used in part to offset federally required County shares for UCAT’s upcoming bus purchases and to fully fund the three zero-emission electric transit buses. As a result of this support from the State and FTA, the County will not need to contribute County capital budget dollars to these projects. 

In order to purchase electric buses, UCAT issued a request for proposals in the fourth quarter of 2019 for battery-electric buses. Following a rigorous review process that included demonstrations of electric buses from all four American manufacturers in early 2020, UCAT awarded New Flyer of America the contract. The buses will also be purchased in part using funds allocated to New York from the federal settlement with Volkswagen, which are administered by NYSERDA’s NY Truck Voucher Incentive Program. UCAT is currently collaborating with the Ulster County Department of Environment, and the Planning Department, and has retained the firm Creighton Manning to study full fleet electrification.

Fourth of July Weekend Motorcade for Essential Workers on Sunday, July 5, 2020 #UlsterCounty #KingstonNY

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that there will be a Fourth of July Weekend Motorcade for Essential Workers on Sunday, July 5 at 4:00pm.

This year, in lieu of the traditional Fourth of July fireworks display, the City of Kingston – and other municipalities across Ulster County -- will participate in a coordinated parade of vehicles. The celebration is intended to honor and celebrate essential and frontline workers, and will include driving past essential workplaces to show support.

The Motorcade will be led by the Kingston Fire Department and Kingston Police Department, along with City officials and community groups. Decorating of vehicles is encouraged. Any family, group or organization who would like to participate, can register here.

Line-up will begin at 3:30pm at Dietz stadium parking lot, and the motorcade will begin at 4:00pm. Registrants will be sent more information on the route and other details.

“We hope everyone will spend a safe Fourth of July holiday with their loved ones and visit the many shops and restaurants that are re-opening,” said Mayor Noble. “The motorcade gives us an opportunity to extend the festivities and celebrate all the essential workers who have our kept our community running during this challenging time. They have truly been heroes, and we appreciate everyone who put their health and safety on the line for their community. On July 5, we will honk our horns and show our gratitude!
